I didn’t want to carry around multiple keys for our new house so I took apart the back door lock and changed the pins to work with our front door key.
- The Ultimate Practice Lock kit (or a large collection of pins of different heights from somewhere else)
- screwdriver, tweezers
Simple project as far as the ‘how’ goes. I took apart the lock and dumped out all the existing pins and springs. Then I put the front door key into the lock and tried different combinations of pins until I found ones that all lined up flush with the top of the lock shaft. Once I had the correct pins I put it all back together.
The extremely difficult part was trying to get the springs back into place as they need to be held down by force while you slide the lock shaft back in. So you’re trying to keep the pins from falling out, the springs from springing out, and also push the lock shaft in. And if you make a mistake and release the spring everything goes flying everywhere.
